Roswell, GA – GS Yuasa Lithium Power (GYLP) has delivered an order of Generation 4 LSE112 lithium-ion cells (112Ah, 3.75V nominal) to EaglePicher Technologies. This delivery marks the first use of GS Yuasa’s Generation 4 space-optimized chemistry in a North American flight program and highlights the ongoing partnership between GYLP and EaglePicher to provide reliable, advanced aerospace cell and battery technology.
The LSE112 cell features GS Yuasa’s Generation 4 LCO/Graphite-based chemistry with a power-optimized electrode design. It is designed for long-life performance in high-power duty cycles, such as 40% depth of discharge (DOD) of nameplate capacity in low Earth orbit (LEO) for over ten years.
Since introducing the “LSE” lithium-ion cell line in 1998, GS Yuasa has tested each of its four generational updates to meet the life and performance demands of most spacecraft missions. This testing additionally supports GS Yuasa’s proprietary life and performance modeling. With this tool and in collaboration with end users, GYLP helps inform cell selection and optimal battery sizing to meet each mission’s unique end-of-life requirements.
The Generation 4 “LSE” cells retain the same physical construction as previous generations, making them fully compatible with existing battery designs. They are available in energy-optimized or power-optimized electrode configurations to suit diverse mission needs. GS Yuasa maintains long-term material availability and configuration control to ensure consistent, reliable performance across programs.
This delivery strengthens GS Yuasa Lithium Power’s track record of providing dependable Li-ion cells for spaceflight. For more information about the “LSE” family of cells, contact GS Yuasa Lithium Power, Inc.
The Generation 4 cell line-up consists of the heritage case form factors as identified in the tables above. Each of the case sizes have been built and qualified. Additionally, a new smaller form factor case is applied to the LSE12x Generation 4 cell.
With volumes of life and performance data available and a solid connection between industry leading spaceflight heritage without failure and the Li-ion cells offered today, GS Yuasa’s value proposition is stronger now than ever.
