Abstract: GS Yuasa has traditionally focused on the manufacture of large form factor cells with capacities ranging from of 50Ah to over 200Ah in a single cell unit. However, GS Yuasa recognizes the industry’s shift to smaller power class satellites, many of which require battery solution less than 50Ah. To address these vehicles GS Yuasa has internally designed and qualified a new small form factor cell with a nameplate capacity of 12Ah for space applications.
The form factor is a departure from the traditional LSE cell and seeks to reduce manufacturing costs by leveraging piece parts from automotive and aviation cell designs while maintaining the demonstrated life, performance and reliability through the use of the qualified Gen4. LCO/Graphite system. Moreover, the LSE12x cells are built to AS9100 quality standards with full configuration control and traceability. These qualities are often lacking in the small cells which can create additional uncertainty and risk which must be carried through the program with ramifications ranging from from added testing to additional program insurance costs. The results from the cell level qualification will be presented for consideration.
