GS Yuasa Lithium Power Successfully Delivers Generation 3 LSE134 Li-ion Cells in Support of NASA’s Dragonfly Mission

10/03/2024

Roswell, GA – GS Yuasa Lithium Power (GYLP) has successfully delivered an order of Generation 3 LSE134 lithium-ion cells (134Ah, 3.75V nominal) for NASA’s Dragonfly mission, a rotorcraft lander project to explore Saturn’s moon Titan. This delivery marks the latest in GS Yuasa’s support of critical missions that deepen humanity’s understanding of the universe.

Currently under development at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) in Laurel, Maryland, Dragonfly will launch to Titan no earlier than 2028. After a roughly six-year interplanetary journey, this car-sized, eight-rotor lander—equipped with advanced science instrumentation—will explore dozens of sites on Titan’s surface. Studying the moon’s carbon-rich chemistry – very much like that of the early Earth before life developed – this groundbreaking mission will revolutionize planetary science, astrobiology, and space technology.

GYLP is proud to supply its Generation 3 LSE134 cells for this historic exploration of Saturn’s largest moon. Featuring a power-optimized electrode design, these high-quality cells are engineered to meet the long-duration demands and unique high-power requirements of rotorcraft flight on Titan

This delivery reinforces GS Yuasa Lithium Power’s proven track record of providing dependable high-performance lithium-ion cells for spaceflight. GYLP has previously supplied cells for other APL-developed NASA missions, including the Van Allen Probes and the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART), highlighting the reliability and importance of its technology in space exploration.
